How Remittances Work

When you send money via SWIFT/wire transfer, the receiving bank in Sri Lanka converts it at their TT (Telegraphic Transfer) buying rate. A higher buying rate = more rupees for the recipient.

Choosing a Bank

  • The difference between the best and worst bank can be Rs 2,000–8,000 per Rs 100,000.
  • BOC and People's Bank sometimes offer incentive schemes for overseas worker remittances.
  • Commercial Bank and Sampath tend to be competitive on USD, GBP, EUR rates.

Transfer Services vs Bank

Services like Wise, Remitly, or Western Union may give better all-in rates than SWIFT once transfer fees are included — especially for amounts under USD 2,000. Compare before sending.

Required Documents

The recipient's bank may require: original remittance slip, passport, and purpose declaration for amounts over USD 10,000.
